What is Psychotherapy?
This is the process of exploring personal issues and feelings that might be painful, threatening or difficult to process on one’s own. Counseling begins by having the client(s) describe their presenting problem. A detailed personal history is then taken to explore earlier issues that may have had impact upon the client. Then, the process of exploration of the current and past issues begin with the ultimate goal of reducing negative emotions, facilitating behaviors that improve life functioning, developing insight and to free the self from prior limitations. Referrals for additional resources may also take place. Psychotherapy usually occurs weekly and may last from two to six months. Sometimes clients choose to continue therapy beyond this point at a much reduced frequency.
